Being Practical May not be the Same as Being Moral

You are participating in a race. One of your closest opponents slips and falls down. He is hurt. Would you stop and help him out or would you rather not care and focus on your race instead?
What do the two terms mean to you? Practicality means having a proper understanding of the situation and not responding to it impulsively. Being practical does not mean being cunning, deceptive or shrewd. Being practical in life refers to being fully aware of your actions and logically achieving results.
Practicality involves having knowledge about both your strengths and weaknesses, and how you use them to plan your tasks. Sometimes accepting reality proves more beneficial than imagining impossible circumstances- helps you to improve your performance. Not aiming sky high when you have no means to achieve it. Being realistic with your goals. Being practical means being logical and rational, without unnecessarily being emotional and superstitious.

Morality on the other side explains the difference between what is right and what is wrong. Morality refers to the set of ethics which define values that guide a man’s life. The good and the evil. The purpose of morality is to teach you to be happy, to be caring, to be kind, to be helpful, to recognize the importance of every specie on this planet. Humanity.

Now coming back to the situation, mentioned above: Helping that person is morality, but at the same winning the race may be equally important. Because maybe the race means everything to you at the moment. Maybe you’ve been preparing for it the whole year. Maybe the prize money will help you pay your college tuition fees. You may stop, you may not stop. But not stopping doesn’t make you a wrong person or selfish. It is just that you decided to choose your interests over someone else’s immediate needs.
You can’t be absolutely moral or be completely practical. You should adopt both features in a proper ratio. There are situations where you should use your reason, and there are situations where you should trust your heart. You need both a brain and a heart to survive, correct? Logic and morality aren’t really an either or question. You need logic in order to create an ethical system, which is the basic definition for morality.
You stop to pick up that person, only when your conscience overpowers your rationality. You choose to run your race, when you know you won’t regret the success later on. Either way you soul is satisfied and that is what is required- self satisfaction.
