Solar-Powered Christmas Lights Save on Utilities

solar-powered-christmas-lights

Al Gore, Barack Obama and now, there’s you. Trying to save the planet isn’t always an easy job, but somebody’s gotta do it. Well, these Christmas lights actually are pretty easy.

The solar panels do all of the work. All you have to do is hang the lights and enjoy. Not only do you get to save a butt load of money on your electricity bill, but you get to save the planet at the same time. It’s really win-win. Plus… hello? Bragging rights!

Solar Cell-Coated Supertower to Be Higher Than Burj Dubai

AbuDhabiSkyscraper2

We thought everything was bigger in Dubai.

Santa Monica building designer Tommy Landau created a model for a 224-story supertower which could one day stand in Abu Dhabi. Hell, the model itself is almost as tall as a man. The structure, aside from far eclipsing the 2,600 ft. Burj Dubai, would be coated in solar cells which would allow the building to power itself. The building will house over 11 million square feet for offices, shops, hotels and condominiums (but no farms that we know of). An early concept of the building includes a large clock at the same height as the Empire State Building would reach on the building.

The project is still under consideration by the Abu Dhabi powers that be, though if approved the $3.5 billion project would likely not be underway for several years to come. I imagine it takes a massive amount of planning and bureaucratic cajoling for a project like this to even break ground

Nano-sized Lock Box Opened with Key Made of DNA

daanbox

Atomically, DNA and its components are about as tiny as we can get before we enter the realm of “I don’t know what the hell I’m looking at here.” So you can imagine how “nano” we’re talking here when we mention a nano-sized box, made of DNA, which can only be opened by a specific DNA strain. Now THAT’S security.

Danish scientists at the Aarhus University Center for DNA Nanotechnology created a 3D box made of DNA. The box’s lid can only be opened when a specific strain of DNA is introduced as the key. What could science possibly use such a tiny box for? Targeted drug delivery, for one. These nano boxes could one day course through your veins, seeking a specific piece of DNA to open its latch and spread its love, just like your mother.

Lux Solar Necklace

solarnecklace

What do you get when you combine Blade Runner, the Sun and Kate Moss?A piece of “jewelry” known as the Lux. It’s a solar panel necklace that you wear around at day and when night comes, the pretty white lights come on. With two hours of sunlight a day, you can light up the night bright as a kite for four hours, right?

Designer Mae Yokoyama actually created a rad concept here. If you could shrink those panels to a much smaller size, I’m sure women would be wearing them in a heartbeat.

DIY Toy Car Launcher

toycarlauncher

Dads. I’ve got some news for you. This weekend, instead of watching your TiVo’d NHL playoff games, you’re going to be making this toy car launcher for your kid. DotaDabbled’s Instructable provides precise details on how you can create one using some wood, plastic and other miscellaneous doo-dads (pardon the pun) lying around the house.

Samsung Blue Earth

samsung-blue-earth-phone

Cellphones are a great convenience for us, but not so great for Mother Earth. See, cellphones pack lots of toxic, non-biodegradable chemicals and components. That’s why Samsung created Blue Earth, a cellie made from recycled plastic bottles that can be charged via solar panels on the back of the device. It’ll text, it’ll call, it’ll even tell you how many trees you’ve saved in a day; just don’t call it a phone. Wait, what?

The best part? The Blue Earth will actually go into production this year, unlike half the cool phones we hear about on the web. Put that in your peace pipe and smoke it. But make sure you compost the ashes!

Solar-powered Nintendo DS Lite

nintd89232

Nintendo is full of Nazis. Did you know that? In fact, the ratio of Nazis to gaming developers at Nintendo is 47:1. That’s huge. It’s also why Nintendo doesn’t put out a solar-powered DS Lite. The console is popular; a smash hit if you will. Why not power it with rays from the sun? At least some dude who’s good with tools was able to make the dream happen. Add a little solar panel, load up those pirated titles and get in the game!

Solar Donkey Kong Junior

This adorable solar toy is bound to entertain you for — an hour, tops. Still, it’s a neat little gizmo you purchase for 20 dollars and build yourself. It’s a solar powered monkey which climbs to its plastic heart’s content.

When the monkey is placed in sunlight it’ll derive power from the sun enabling it to climb the rope, hand over hand! It’s also another cheap and easy way out of a science fair project with your kid.
