Afternoon Linkage for January 7th, 2009

Samsung P3 Sneak Peek!

Samsung is updating its portable media player with the successor to the Samsung YP-P2, the Samsung P3. The device will be formerly announced in January, joining the media player race alongside the iPod, Toshiba U103 and the non-existant MySpace PMP.

Subtle changes include its rectangular aluminum body and three inch 480 x 272 touchscreen. You can expect it to have Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, FM and many of the other typical photo, audio and video capabilities found in portable media players. Storage capacity will range from 4GB to 32GB with varying prices which will be announced at a later date. Expect this to hit store shelves in early 2009.

Myspace Drinks The DAP Kool-Aid

Who does Chris DeWolfe, CEO of MySpace.com, think he is? Michael Arrington of TechCrunch? Because he certainly doesn’t think he’s the CEO of MySpace. If he did, he wouldn’t have come up with the crazy notion that MySpace could compete in what is essentially Apple’s market of portable media players. Seriously, a MySpace-branded portable media player? Are you nuts?

According to Reuters, DeWolfe is only thinking about it. Let’s hope this idea remains a thought never to be realized, lest it joins the ranks of the Zune all the way at the bottom. If Microsoft can’t compete, what makes MySpace think it can? Clearly, it’s the Kool-Aid.

First Official iPhone Battery Pack Drops

mophiejuicepak

Mophie must be ecstatic. As the first iPod/iPhone accessories manufacturer to nab the coveted “Works With iPhone” seal-of-approval, Mophie’s Juice Pack Battery Extender is likely to be the first sold in Apple stores and such. With an LED battery indicator on the back, similar to that found on Apple laptops, combined with long-ass battery life (24 hours of additional audio playback, 250 hours of standby time), Mophie could easily see increased sales thanks to a single badge on the front of its box.

Non-slip finish, fits your iPhone like a glove and goes for $100. If you use your iPhone as your primary PMP, this is probably an invaluable addition to your daily tech arsenal.

Dual media player for MP3 and CD playing

dmp.jpg

OK, well we know we say this about at least one concept a week, but this just might be the coolest damn concept design we’ve ever seen. Dual Music Player, or DMP, is a media player that can play both CDs and MP3s. Sure, there have been Discman MP3 players, but never something that fully embraces both forms of media.

The DMP also looks insanely awesome thanks to its open cased CD playing style. When folded up, the DMP looks like any other sleek designed PMP. Though unclasp the two sides, throw in a disc, and watch the magic happen. — Andrew Dobrow

Thanko MP4 Metal goes shiny

mp4.jpg

Thanko presents their newest PMP watch edition, the MP4 Metal. Previous versions look relatively flimsy compared to the armory style of the new MP4. The Metal improves the Thanko watch on multiple levels. The screen is now available in 128×128 and 160×128 pixels for their 2 GB and 4 GB models.

For their next version of the MP4, we’d love to see SD card integration for some extra media space. That would be just plain spectacular. Metal will be available starting tommorow from GeekStuff4U.com.

Jobs versus Gates one week away in the ultimate technology battle royale

vs_1.jpg

Less than a week remains until Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Microsoft Dictator Bill Gates square off in a head to head debate at the All Things Digital Event over in New York City. What can we expect out of the big two. A cordial convo or a raunchy romp?

There will no doubt be lots of mud thrown over the whole PMP competition between the Zune and the iPod as well as talk about a possible Zune phone compared to the upcoming iPhone. We’d love just to see these guys go at it. Tux can be the ref. — Andrew Dobrow

Slideon.v2: Even more ghostly

slideon_v2_1.jpg

A few days ago we talked about the Slideon concept PMP design and its sleek slider style. With the first version fresh in our minds, the Slideon.v2 improves on the already gorgeous MP3 player.

v2 features a huge wide-screen, which is as big as a normal iPod. The slide design means no obtrusive buttons to get in the way and change the track or volume when it’s not wanted. It features two buttons and a middle slider control, which is touch-sensitive. It’s much thinner than the original concept and all around, much more usable. — Andrew Dobrow

Slideon MP3 Player is ghostly

slideon_1.jpg

With the ever-changing mobile phone market becoming a breeding ground for slider phones, it’s no surprise that a PMP player would eventually be designed in the fashion of the slide design. Hell, Apple’s doing the opposite for the iPhone, right? The Slideon MP3 Player is a concept design from Ian Murchison.

The Slideon is designed to integrate the sleekness of the slide with the portable media crowd, with the controls all hidden under its sleek geometric screen. The Slideon would feature flash-based memory and a battery that can be charged through the headphone jack. (more…)
