How To Improve Your IT Skills, To Make You More Desirable To Employers

1

Almost every job these days requires some knowledge of IT. If you’re a bit of a technophobe, don’t worry. We all start somewhere. Once you start pushing yourself to learn information and communication technology skills, it will begin to look increasingly less daunting. Being able to show computing skill is a huge bonus to your CV, so it’s worth trying.

Work Things Out For Yourself

One of the best ways to become better at using a computer is to just work out problems for yourself. Instead of asking someone who is tech-savvy to lend you a hand, do what you can with Google and forums to come up with a solution. By learning the hard way, your experience will slowly build-up your knowledge of computers. Don’t shift the responsibility to someone else (but, if you are really struggling, it does sometimes help to ask for a friend to explain a process to you).

Take Free, Online Courses

As always, the internet is a wealth of free resources. You can learn a surprising amount of things by studying online or taking an IT course. You often won’t have to pay for this, and you can swot up from the comfort of your own home. The more you research resources and try out new things, the more you will succeed. Apps are also another great learning resource, but you will need a smartphone to make the most of this!

Go Back To School

Even if you can’t go back to college or university, there are information and communications technology courses available in most areas. Sometimes it’s worth spending a little money to reskill, so you can potentially make more money in the future. Just think of it as an investment in yourself! You can go to an institution to do this, or you can take part in an informal course. Just be sure that you will have some kind of concrete qualification or certificate at the end.

Review Your Weaknesses

If you want to become better at something, list your weak points and target these first. Of course, it’s always the last place that learners want to start, but the chinks in your armour are exactly what you should work on first. Write up goals for the future, and do your best to hit these. Even if it moves you out of your comfort zone, and even if it’s frustrating, you need to push through!

Help Others

Help yourself by helping others! One of the best ways to force yourself into learning is to teach or aid friends and family. By offering to pass on the knowledge that you have picked up, it’ll sit more concretely in your mind. Somehow, clearly laying processes out for other people to understand helps you gain a better understanding of what you’ve learned. Give it a try!
