Hack: PIC controlled visual guitar tuner and preamp

Using a PIC microcontroller and an old stereo system, the developer of this hack, known simply as Rob, created a guitar tuner that visually represents the tuning of your guitar strings. LED’s are used to indicate how well tuned each string is. I recently had to make a guitar amplifier and thought it would be cool to include a PIC based guitar tuner” says Rob. We totally agree, fellow gearhead.

Using an AIWA 3-disc stereo, Rob removed the whole CD mechanism, including laser unit and spindle drive, and used the same audio inputs on the main board where the CD audio signal was sent to, to plug-in the guitar signal, so all he had to do to use it as an amp was have the stereo on the CD channel. The guitar input is then buffered through an Analog Devices AD620 instrumentation amplifier, which Rob admits is overkill for the project.
