‘Civilization IV’ Theme Nets First Gaming Grammy

For the first time in its history, a Grammy Award has been given out in recognition of a song composed for a video game.

Composer Christopher Tin won the award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) for the song Baba Yetu at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards. While the song itself appeared on the album Calling All Dawns (which itself won for Best Classical Contemporary Album), the song is most recognized by gamers as being the opening theme for the 2005 game Civilization IV.

While the song itself was composed six years ago, the inclusion of it on Tins Calling All Dawns album qualified it for the awards this year. Even though this is the first time any piece of music composed for a video game has won a Grammy, this is not the first bit of accolade for Baba Yetu, which had previously won two Gang Audio Network Guild (G.A.N.G.) awards, which recognize audio excellence in video games.
