Palm Treo, Apple iPhone Mashup

The funkmasters over at Yanko Design have done it again. Yet another rendering of a wacky product has been thrown up and this time, it draws inspiration from everyone’s favorite phone and a Palm Treo. It has the shape and look of a Treo but the touchscreen and gaudiness of an iPhone. A match made in heaven.

Would you buy it? Not everyone is a fan of the iPhone and there are still diehard Palm fanatics. This seems like a decent compromise of design and functionality that will please everyone. I wonder if you’ll be able to keep your club cards on it…

Vladmaster: Viewmaster Film Wheels

vladmaster01

Remember when you were a kid a the Viewmaster 3-D was the coolest fucking thing since the hot fudge sundae? Of course you do. Now imagine if a hip artist with a keen liking for Kafka came up with her own set of Viewmaster film wheels. Such is the case with Portland-based artist Vladimir.

Vladimir first takes 3-D pictures of miniature, hand-built scenes. After the film is developed, it’s glued to the Viewmaster wheel and is ready for viewing. Each Vladmaster set comes with four reels for a Viewmaster 3-D, instructions and an audio CD to accompany the tale. Stories range from $18 and up.

Texas Instruments Bringing Projectors to Mobile Phones By Year’s End

cellphoneprojector01

Imagine the possibilities of having a tiny mobile-projector inside your cellphone. You could hold your own intimate private screenings, showcase the bestiality porn you found on IRC last night or broadcast. Really, the possibilities are endless. Thanks to John Van Scoter over at Texas Instruments, we now know that some cellphones will receive a portable projector by the end of 2008.

According to Van Scoter, he believes that by 2010, projectors will be as popular as built-in cameras. Some may even feature DLP technology to enhance the clarity of the movie being played. It’s really only a matter of time before hackers get a hold of some of these projection-enabled devices and use the projectors in another setting or homebrew device.

Incoming! Missiles From the Ceiling

Filed under: Design, Displays, Gaming, Software

The Atari 1980 masterpiece Missile Command is given a whole new take on interactive gaming thanks to Steven Mason. Steve wrote the clone for the multi-touch wall at Obscure Digital. It’s the same classic game, except you touch to shoot defending projectiles at incoming missiles. This adds a new element of game play and also gets your lazy ass off the couch. Chances are it’ll have you frantically slapping your hands against a wall for both exercise and entertainment.

We’ve seen this sort of technology before, even some with some newer games like Warcraft 3, but a classic such as Missile Command gives us a retro game with a fresh take on gameplay. I don’t see this kind of technology boosting the gaming industry’s innovation anymore than the Wii (a modern-day power glove), but seeing old Atari classics brought to life again makes me nostalgic.

Tae Kwon Do Vest Measures Your Kick Strength, Makes Me Want Asian Cuisine

taevest.jpg

Some people assume that taking up a course in Tae Kwon Do will make you a kung fu ninja master overnight. This just couldn’t be further from the truth. It takes years and years of dedication to reach black belt status. But once you reach that point, there is little that can stop you from kicking an epic amount of ass.

The Tae Kwon Do Vest is a sweet little wearable project which enables users to measure their kick strength using a series of piezoelectric sensors, an MCU which cues a hit detection scheme and a set of wireless transmission crcuits for emitting a specified byte of data when a kick is detected (also detected via the massive pain in your chest.) A special receiver system translates the kick strength numerically then displays the numbers on a screen. (more…)

Clear the Clutter: LowKey Computer Stand

lowkeystand1

Those of you who recently bought a new iMac are probably in love with it. However, I think you’ll agree that unplugging and plugging in USB devices left and right can become a pain in the ass. Enter the LowKey Stand, a stand that matches the iMac in both looks and usability.

On the front, you’ll find room to store that brushed aluminum keyboard as well as a 4-port USB hub. Having those extra USB ports in the front will prove a lifesaver for those of you with one too many cocks. The only downfall with the LowKey Stand is that it can support 35 pounds max, so don’t go throwing your CRT monitor on there. $60 and it’s yours.

Kryptonite Replica Display: Multi-Colored Death

Christopher Reeves only had two enemies whom attacked his vulnerabilities the worst: Horses and Kryptonite, both for different reasons. Kryptonite was among the only materials known to man which could bring the mighty Superman to his knees (other than Lois Lane, of course.)

Rumor has it that Superman used Kryptonite as an excuse for his super limp noodle. “Are these sheets made of Kryptonite? Because, uh, you know, it sometimes has that effect.”

Designed in special protective casing, the Red, Gold, Blue and Green Kryptonite meteorites are all on display with this replica. Measuring 7.25″ x 10.75″ x 9.5″, the Kryptonite Replica Display is pure poison for anyone from the planet Krypton, but should be fine for us earthlings. Get your own for $275.

greenpix-wall.jpg

Excitement is mounting about the Olympics in Beijing. Some pretty extravagant arrangements are being erected (LOLz, erect) to show off Beijing’s growing environmental friendliness. The Greenpix Zero Energy Wall stands at the Xicui entertainment complex near the site of the Olympic Games.

The Greenpix wall uses a combination of the largest color LED display technology with a photovoltaic system, which allows the wall to burn only the energy it produces itself. The big ass wall is planned to go live at some point this month with a bunch of video installations and live performances by artists from China, Europe and the US planned after its launch. Hit the jump for a video of the wall in action. (more…)

MEGASCREEN: The Name Makes Perfect Sense

megascreens.jpg

You can go and envy Mr. Rich Man while watching his 70″+ plasma TV through the window of your local mansion. See how proud he seems of his accomplishment? All of these years of work, so he can enjoy a TV. Only if he knew that his measly 70 inches are dwarfed by the humongous MEGASCREEN! A TV so large it’s enormousness can only be explained in all-caps.

Big Moving Pictures Inc. is mounting their 40′ x 22′ HDTV LED displays on the only objects big enough to carry such a load: MACK trucks. Designed to provide video to audiences up to 100,000 strong, MEGASCREENS are the “biggest and most powerful LED-based display solution yet devised.” Yet, they’re still not large enough, dammit!

Arcstream “Living Image” Lets You Walk On Interactive Fake Water

Filed under: Design, Displays, Science, Videos

Jesus was known for a wide assortment of parlor tricks. If I had to choose one of Jesus’ powers, it would have to be turning water into wine, just because I’m a drunk badass like that. Arcstream AV is conquering another one of those biblical tricks with their interactive “Living Image” exhibit at The Science Museum in South Kensington, London.

Living Image uses a 6,500 lumens overhead projector and a variety of sensors that let the 1024 x 768 image of water change in real-time, depending on the visitor’s interaction with the floor display. Special infrared sensors allow for more than one person to interact with the displays at one time. Check out an awesome demo video after the jump. (more…)
