US-based WiMAX Network Ready To Launch

wimax_wixd_101.gif

Sprint and Samsung today announced that its joint-venture wireless infrastructure, better known as WiMAX, is ready for service. This comes after years of scrutiny against Sprint for basically fucking everything up along the way. Still, mistakes aside, WiMAX looks to bring a new generation of high-bandwidth web surfing to our laptops.

Have you missed out on WiMAX news in the past? Not sure what it is? This little bit from Wikipedia explains it wisely:

WiMAX, the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology aimed at providing wireless data over long distances in a variety of ways, from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular type access. It is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard, which is also called WirelessMAN. The name “WiMAX” was created by the WiMAX Forum, which was formed in June 2001 to promote conformance and interoperability of the standard. The forum describes WiMAX as “a standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL” (and also to HSPA).

With speeds up to 70 Mbps and Siemens announcing the SE680 WiMAX Modem, 2008 and 2009 are gearing up to be the year for broadband access across multiple devices. It’s only a matter of time before someone starts sniffing out WiMAX networks and breaking their encryption.

Doom 4 Confirmed

doom4rendering

I’m pretty sure Doom is the single greatest contribution to the computer to grace our planet. It defined the first-person shooter genre and every sequel just kept getting better and better with Doom 3 blowing everyone away a few years back. Now the latest installment, Doom 4, has been confirmed by id Software’s CEO, Todd Hollenshead. The above picture is supposedly a shot from the new title.

Currently, id is looking to hire “the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry” for its signature title. No release date has been given but apparently the game will be released on both console and PC simultaneously. OK, you can get back to Grand Theft Auto IV now.

Hello and Welcome

Gearfuse Readers,

I was going to write some long, rambling manifesto introducing myself but then breakfast came. You see, in Queens, you can order your breakfast from a second-rate deli and they’ll deliver it for free as long as you tip the guy a buck. They not only brought me a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, I also was able to extract a pack of smokes, a beer, and a copy of the Post from them.

Can your Playstation 3 do that? No, I didn’t think so. Oh yeah, I’m on the far left of this picture. Yeah, the guy pretending to cup a set of balls while my SimpleWeather co-workers laugh in utter disgust. This is probably the best picture I have at the moment. Shit.

Keep reading in the coming weeks and I think you’ll discover a very exciting format we’re slowly rolling out here. It’s time to get you involved.

All the best,

VV

Go Get Your Free Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream

Some might argue that ice cream is not related to technology. If you saw how Ben & Jerry’s cranks out all those pints of Americone Dream, you’d probably beg to differ. Either way, every geek loves ice cream and today is Free Cone Day. Free Cone Day is when you go to a Ben & Jerry’s store (find yours here) and wait in line with a million other people for a free ice cream cone.

Don’t complain. Get out there and get a cone. I’m going for the Carmel Sutra. What flavor are you going to demand from B&J? Let us know in the comments.

Happy Thanksgiving! Let’s go slaughter some Indians

Today is a day of great importance in American history. Today we celebrate our thanks to the sacrifices laid down by our pilgrim fore fathers. By sacrifices, of course we mean human sacrifices. We celebrate the slaughter of the Indian’s and their laughably primitive ways. Huzzah!

This year I have made a special Geronimo Apple-themed image in honor of the holiday, regardless of both of these subjects being pretty unrelated to Thanksgiving (other than many people giving Thanks to Apple for the iPhone.) Just remember, you can’t make slaughter without laughter. Happy Thanksgiving! — The Gearfuse Staff

Introducing Editor Sean Fallon

I’d like to introduce a whole new writer here at Gearfuse, the excellent Sean Fallon. If Sean’s name sounds familiar to you, it’s because he’s an active tech writer at The Uber-Review and Nerd Approved. From now on you’ll be reading Sean’s daily posts and he’ll be doing his best to bring you an original, tongue-in-cheek view of tech in general, much in the usual style of Gearfuse. Welcome aboard, Sean!

Since our launch in December ‘06, things have been hectic here with our fast growth — and also our share of difficulties, and again I’d like to thank all of our readers and linking sites for your loyalty. We’re going to continue to provide you with fresh and interesting content in our own voice and I hope you all are looking forward to it as much as I am.

We’re constantly looking for more writers, and if you feel right for the job, drop us a line.

To send in a tip for the site, as usual shoot us an email at tips AT gearfuse DOT com.

And yet we are still getting served

You might be wondering why we haven’t had many new updates the last few days. It turns out that altering our server plan has shown to be more complicated than we previously thought it would be. But, we’re sure things will be ironed out very soon, most likely this weekend. Thank you for being so patient with us guys. We know it’s a drag. We’ve been going a little nuts ourselves over here.

Again, we love you all. Thanks for reading and bear with us!

We Got Served

Hey, guys. Sorry for the minor foul up this morning. Gearfuse has been having some server glitches so we’ve changed hosting plans with Media Temple. We’ll now be able to handle our rapidly growing traffic. We should be back to normal pretty soon. Though, if things are a little glitchy, we apologize for the annoyance.

Thanks for reading. You guys are everything to us.
