Laser Crosswalk Saves Pedestrians From a Painful Death

laser-wall1

When the light turns red, a huge laser wall projecting apparitions of crossing pedestrians spans across the crosswalk. The concept is designed to keep crossing pedestrians safe from any overzealous drivers whom otherwise might have ran the red light.

Al Gore, Barack Obama and now, there’s you. Trying to save the planet isn’t always an easy job, but somebody’s gotta do it. Well, these Christmas lights actually are pretty easy.

The solar panels do all of the work. All you have to do is hang the lights and enjoy. Not only do you get to save a butt load of money on your electricity bill, but you get to save the planet at the same time. It’s really win-win. Plus… hello? Bragging rights!

Street Light Floor Lamp

floor-lamp-01

Everyday, thousands of street lights are orphaned, sent to the junk yard to rot, with no one to maintain their slowly rusting bodies, their LED and solar brethren slowly taking their place. Please, help save these helpless street lights and adopt one for your own personal use.

These Street Light Floor Lamps use re-appropriated street lights to create a unique lamp for your home while saving the life of a helpless public servant. Every time you ignore a street light a kitty dies.

An MP3 Player That Goes Straight Into Your Ear

thanko-mp3-player-2_6jcXY_54

Thanko might not be known for their practicality, but I think they might be on to something for once. Their Micro Sports MP3 Player looks more like a Bluetooth headset. The device fits right into your ear with a built-in earbud. It’s that tiny.

Available in 2GB and 4GB flavors, the Micro Sports MP3 Player looks a little chintzy, but seems to be even tinier than Apple’s iPod Shuffle.

Solar Cell-Coated Supertower to Be Higher Than Burj Dubai

AbuDhabiSkyscraper2

We thought everything was bigger in Dubai.

Santa Monica building designer Tommy Landau created a model for a 224-story supertower which could one day stand in Abu Dhabi. Hell, the model itself is almost as tall as a man. The structure, aside from far eclipsing the 2,600 ft. Burj Dubai, would be coated in solar cells which would allow the building to power itself. The building will house over 11 million square feet for offices, shops, hotels and condominiums (but no farms that we know of). An early concept of the building includes a large clock at the same height as the Empire State Building would reach on the building.

The project is still under consideration by the Abu Dhabi powers that be, though if approved the $3.5 billion project would likely not be underway for several years to come. I imagine it takes a massive amount of planning and bureaucratic cajoling for a project like this to even break ground

Chinese Man Who Created DIY Submarine Out of Oil Barrels Makes Water Debut

homemade-submarine1

Using nothing more than two years, $4,385, and some good ole hard word and ingenuity, China native Tao Xiangli created his DIY Submarine. We like to keep up to date with people and objects we’ve written about in the past so it’s our honor to let you know that the DIY Sub made its water debut on September 3.

Made from discarded oil barrels, the sub includes a periscope, depth control tanks and electric motors. Despite the small budget, he seems to get around pretty easily.

A Robot with an iPhone for a Head

iphone-robot

Here is one bot that won’t be forced to sing “If I Only Had a Brain…” to any absent-minded wizard. The bo’ts head is composed of a fully-functioning iPhone 3GS, its body composed of a Kondo KHR-2HV bot. The iPhone connects to the body via a special dock.

Dubbed Robochan, the iPhone serves as the bot’s face and brain, simulating facial expressions and acting as a controller for the robot’s cute little dancing. Check out a video of this adorable little bugger after the jump.

“WTF, Not What I Thought” Lamp: No, Really… WTF?

wtflamp

Maybe Steve, our French-speaking publisher here at Gearfuse could better answer the question, “Why the fuck do French designers always have to do things bass ackwards? Does it make them feel more ‘artsy?’ Do your berets block your eyesight? Too much wine perhaps?’”

The “WTF, Not What I Thought” Lamp, designed by John Nouanesing, surprises the unsuspecting switch-flicker by illuminating the lamp stand rather than emitting a glow from beneath the shade. Very smart, Frenchy. Blind us, why don’t you. I guess that way it’s harder for us to aim our guns at your back as you run away. I’ll be waiting for your answer, Steve.
