Best Buy Leaks Black Friday Ad; Will Pass Out Tickets to Avoid Consumer Stampede

bestbuy

Best Buy’s Black Friday ad has leaked, which means it’s time to do some serious itinerary planning for the big day. See, I like me and my fiancee set up a full contingency plan based on what we want the most for us, then comes gifts for others. Come on, we need to set priorities people! Strategy is the name of the game on Black Friday.

So Best Buy has some moderately cool deals, especially in the video game department, but nothing mind-blowing. Though what might be notable is that Best Buy is not going to allow for anyone to get hurt this year because of their doorbuster deals. Apparently they don’t take “death by stampede” lightly. All doorbuster sales will be handled via tickets, which will be passed out up to two hours before the 5 am door openings. Hit the jump for a full-list of Black Friday Best Buy deals. Doorbusters are followed by an asterisk.

PS3 Slim Dipped in Solid Gold

24kt-gold-ps3-preview1

King Midas might have missed his true calling. Transforming gaming consoles into golden pieces of luxurious entertainment. Computer-Choppers offers a sneak peek at their PS3 Slim dipped in 24-karat gold.

Only five of these golden geese will be produced, so the price is sure to be even more extravagant than just a “normal” golden PS3.

Joystick Built Inside of NES Console

NES-Console-Joystick-Mod_1

Even if my NES were still around, I doubt it would work. There’s something about sitting around in a dusty closet that doesn’t work well with the functioning hardware of gaming consoles. But don’t let it’s inability to work get you down. There are still plenty of possibilities.

The NEStickle is a Sanwa joystick, including buttons, built right inside of an old defunct NES console. The stick with compatible with Xbox 360, PS3, PS2 and even Windows, Mac and Linux machines. While the NEStickle is certainly not the most space conscious gadget, if nothing else it’s an awesome example of console recycling.

Video Review: Netflix PS3 Instant Streaming Disc

Today is the day, baby. Most of you who reserved a PS3 Instant Stream disc will be receiving yours today. I happened to be one of the lucky ones who got their hands on a disc a littler earlier in the day so I’ve taken the liberty of reviewing the disc for those of you who were still on the fence about going through the trouble of reserving your own copy.

The whole process is pretty seamless. The first time you pop in the disc you’re required to go through a very simple activation process, but after that you’re home free. The cover flow UI is easy to navigate after you get used to the slightly clumsy square-button led navigation. The quality is MUCH better than I expected, almost reaching DVD quality and definitely out pacing both my PC and my Mac.

Enough of my pandering. Check out the video and see for yourself!

PS3 Slim Gets Smooshed Into A Laptop

ps3s_1

The PS3 Slim was already beginning to feel a little chubby. Time takes a a toll on the body. Thankfully, we have Ben Heck to make everything more portable. His new PS3 Slim Laptop takes the improved hardware of the Slim and makes it even more mobile with his notebook-inspired mod.

Xbox Controller Chair Made Out of Cardboard

xbox-cardboard-chair

Like a lot of geeks out there I have a constant stream of crap being shipped to me from various internet companies. But I’m getting sick of just chucking all of the cardboard away. There has to be something productive we can create using all of our excess boxes.

And then I came across this and I had a “Eureka!” moment. Duh. Why not create a piece of furniture? And a geeky piece of furniture at that! I might just have to make a PS3 version. Maybe one day I’ll make a Wii cardboard toilet. We already shit on the Wii plenty anyway.

One-Handed Xbox 360 Controller

sc_1

Righties rejoice. Ben Heck has done it again with a brand new mod. This time around the Heck-ster created a one-handed Xbox 360 controller. The addition of a semi-intrusive joystick removes the need for the left side of the controller. An added mechanism on the rear of the controller manages the bumper action.

While it’s not as pretty as some of his past creations, it gets the job done, leaving your left hand free for more important activities. Specifically while playing Tomb Raider. *wink wink* (Yes… masturbation.) Lefties are still left with no hands.

Netflix Finally Hands Over $1 Million Prize; Starts a New Contest

Netflix

Back in October 2006, Netflix began their $1 million challenge, offering a cash reward to the development team whom could improve Cinematch, the company’s recommendation engine, by at least 10%. After nearly three years the winner has finally been compensated.

Netflix considered the million such a good investment that they’ve decided to start all over again. This time, Netflix will “present the contestants with demographic and behavioral data, and they will be asked to model individuals’ “taste profiles.”’ Unlike the past contest, there will be no minimum improvement required. $500k will go to the team leading after 6 months, the other $500k given to the team following 18 months. Netflix has found their new research tool and they’ve hired the public to do the job for them. I’m sure its cheaper than paying a full research team to do the same job.

Playstation 4 Next Gen Concept

playstation4-concept1

Designed by the same fortune teller who created this Xbox 720 concept, Tai Chiem’s next target is the Playstation 4, the potential next gen console for Sony and the sequel for the PS3.

Much like the Xbox 360, the PS3 still has a few more years of life left in its lifespan of relevency. In fact, I believe the console is on the tail end of its prime years, especially with the recent launch of the PS3 Slim. But it’s never too early to start playing around with potential designs for the PS4. In the mind of Chiem, the PS4 would feature transparent surfaces made for adaptive touch screens, able to navigate the system and change UIs based on your gaming or media needs.
